Is My Period Normal? All Your Period Questions Answered

My usual response to the word ‘normal’ is to chuck it out of the window. But when it comes to periods it’s really useful to know what is considered a normal period and what you should get checked.  Certain things can indicate problems, the colour of your period blood for example, and let’s face it…none of us want any more period problems, right? Firstly, menstrual irregularities aren’t usually an indication of anything serious but they can sometimes signal health problems. In good news, what's considered a normal period is actually pretty broad and we all know how sensitive our periods are. That means that most changes to your period aren't because something is wrong with you. Something else could be affecting your cycle such as stress or tiredness. So, to make sure [...]

Periods and Mental Health: It’s Time To Ask For Help

For decades periods and our mental health have been punchlines for jokes. While we've struggled with our periods and mental health, society has laughed leading to menstrual and mental shame. That shame has left us overwhelmed and isolated. We have been made to feel that we should just deal with these things, or worse, that these weren’t ‘things’ at all. We've struggled with our periods and our mental health without treatment or support because we’ve been taught that menstruation is not mental. But the medical world is starting to acknowledge a clear link between our periods and our mental health. In 2013, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) was included as a depressive disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. And with people becoming more vocal about their periods and mental [...]

7 Benefits Of Reusable Sanitary Pads

Listen, I get it. Making the switch from disposable pads to reusable sanitary pads takes a leap of faith. While you may be sold on the environmental benefits of Wear 'Em Out pads, the reality of switching to a reusable sanitary pad isn’t always easy. To help, I’ve put together a list of all the benefits of reusable sanitary pads. Trust me when I tell you, changing to reusable pads isn’t just great for the environment, it’s also better for you.   Benefit 1: Reusable Sanitary Pads Reduce Plastic Use Every year, in the UK alone, 200,000 tonnes of menstrual waste ends up in landfill. That's about the weight of 1,739 blue whales or (if we were being crude), a metric f*ck tonne. And it gets worse. Disposable sanitary pads [...]

Too scared to make the switch? I hear ya….

When I first thought of trying (I wasn’t committing at that point) reusable period pads the thing that I just couldn’t get past was having to handle my own period blood *gag With disposables I had mastered the rip and roll, rip from my pants, roll and stuff it into a bin never giving it another thought, so why would I actively choose to stuff my pants with cloth that I would have to rinse out *still gagging  So, how did I go from the unconscious ‘rip and roll’ to the conscious, happy to wash, happy to wear, hell, I was even happy enough to manufacture (in the UK tbw) […]

What to expect from a post-birth bleed

I’ve been fortunate enough to have had 4 babies (although motherhood still doesn’t come naturally to me) and so I’ve had a few opportunities to ‘endure’ the mega post birth bleed or ‘Lochia’ as it’s known by it’s official term ‘Lochia is just like your period — only heavier and (often much) longer-lasting. It also has some components that you won’t find in a basic menstrual period, like mucus and tissue from your uterus, mostly from where the placenta was attached. […]

The scary switch to eco washing detergent (why does it feel scary?)

I have to confess that the heavy weight of environmental guilt is palpable in the air all around. I feel it all day everyday and it’s a battle to constantly remind myself that it’s OK, that I’m still learning and that that is OK, that every small change I make in my life is a change for good, that I am indeed contributing. I often remind myself that if everyone made small daily changes whilst keeping their minds open to other changes they can be making, then we are heading in the right direction. I had a message this morning from a friend asking me about how I found the Soap Nuts (little nuts you put in your wash to replace detergent) I’d been using. I replied with ‘yea they’re [...]

Are you ready to step into secondhand?

Here’s an interesting (and sad) fact... ‘More than 300,00 tonnes of used clothes goes to landfill in the UK every year, according to WRAP, the waste charity. It said that 5 percent of the UK’s total annual carbon and water footprint came from clothing consumption. Textiles release methane, a greenhouse gas as they degrade in landfill’. I mean, who knew? Recently I recorded an episode of my podcast - PERIODICAL - with a lady called Jade who I’ve recently started following on Instagram (@notbuyingnew). I began following her when my curiosity around how I could become more eco conscious when thinking of clothing. Curiosity ramped right up after reading facts like the one above. I had to get curious about how I could embark on my eco clothing journey and [...]
